My sisters and brothers wanted a way to keep up on what everyone is reading and doing. I made this blog for us, our parents and our kids -- and some friends.

a new beginning

There. This blog is for all of us, familia. I'll re-post my favorite things after work. We need to work on our profile, is all. If anybody has a family photo already uploaded, you can paste the URL. To upload them here is harder -- you need Hello or something.

Terry's archive

Long-time favorites along with the newer ones, sans much comment. Sorry if it's long; I'm expecting backlogs from all of you, also.
Books:
  • Lorna Doone by Blackmore. The hero reminds me of dad.
  • David Copperfield by Dickens. It was 800 (or so) pages, and I was sad to finish it.
  • Emma by Jane Austen

Books from our lifetimes:

  • I, Claudius
  • A Desert in Bohemia by Jill Paton Walsh
  • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime
  • The Abyssinian

Movies:

  • Delicatessen by Jeunet (Amelie) and Caro. It's not out on DVD in the US, and it's getting difficult to find even on VHS. But it's worth a search.

  • City of Lost Children by Jeunet (and maybe Caro). Weirder even than Delicatessen

  • Heathers. You know it.

  • Old School, for when you're feeling naughty

  • Bottle Rocket, the best of the Wilson brothers

  • Raising Arizona

  • The six-hour BBC (?) version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth. Everyone who likes Bridget Jones should watch this. It's the original.

  • Bridget Jones

  • Garden State

  • the English Patient.

Music:

  • Pixies -- these guys are touring again (still!)
  • Tom Waits -- Alice, Real Gone, Bone Machine and Mule Variations are my favorites. Even mom and dad liked Alice.
  • Elvis Costello -- I love them all. Some people don't like his ballads, but then some people wear mullets and watch Nascar, too.
  • the Garden State soundtrack. It's mellow and moving and you can put it on when the kids are home. When they play it in the climbing gym, I climb better. I swear it!

  • the Eagles of Death Metal. This is not (!) death metal, I'd call it humorous, big-hair surf.

  • Stellastar -- fred introduced me to this when I rode home from Danny's with him and Eileen. It's all the good bits of the 80s in one band: surf guitar, fun pop compositions and Human League vocals. I bought the album the day after our trip.
