My sisters and brothers wanted a way to keep up on what everyone is reading and doing. I made this blog for us, our parents and our kids -- and some friends.

a CD of memories

A few years ago I thought I would try to collect up some of the music we used to listen to when we were young. I have collected a few things:

  • Shannon by Henry Gross. Remember it? ("Shannon is gone I heard, she drifted out to sea/ she always loved to swim away...")
  • Hey, Good Lookin' by Hank Williams. I played Hank's greatest hits for dad once; I think it was the first time he realized he was a country fan. (I am, too, at least as far as Hank is concerned.) Dad knew almost every song. He also used to sing Cold, Cold Heart.
  • Jefferson Airplane
  • Live Rust by Neil Young
  • ELO Classics, in particular: Don't Bring Me Down
  • Neil Diamond: Sweet Caroline, more
  • Da Da Da by Trio
  • The Girl with the Far Away Eyes by the Rolling Stones ("I was driving home early Sunday morning, through Bakersfield, when the preacher said, 'You know you always have the lord by your side..")
  • The rest of Some Girls by the Stones.

I also have a bunch of music from that genre that I don't remember listening to then: Herbie Hancock, the Jackson 5, Funkadelic. We somehow missed out on a lot of good black musicians. Nowadays I prefer them to the Eagles and Steve Miller Band. Really prefer them, which is why those bands are omitted from the above list. I also have some Bowie from that period: Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane.

The point: I also have a nifty new computer with a CD burner, so I could make us a familial memory CD, like that old tape the Maglicic's had. But you folks might have suggestions, and anyway I'm still missing some stuff I think is important (does anybody have it?):

  • King of the Road, by somebody in the Rat Pack. "Trailers for sale or rent/ Rooms to that 50 cent" Okay, that probably dates from when dad was young, but we grew up listening to him sing it.
  • Save the Last Dance by the X Family Singers. I have tried to find the version of that song that we grew up with, and I can't. Does anybody remember what X is? I think it was on a K-Tel album.

technical stuff

This is great! People are at least commenting! But you can create posts, too. Or, everyone but Eileen can.

How to post: First, follow the instructions in your invitation email. Your membership to this group is affiliated with an email address that I have given blogger.com -- if you tell it another email, you will not become a member. (But I can change the email address it has if you like.) After that, at any time you may go to http://www.blogger.com to post. Log in, click the blog name and find the tab at the top that says, 'Posting.' Click the 'Create' link below it, and just type. When you're done, scroll down (the outer screen) and hit 'Publish Post.' Ta-da!

Alexandra, I'm sure you discovered this, but if you want to write the HTML yourself, hit the 'Edit HTML' tab up top instead of the 'Compose' tab. You can even toggle back and forth.

Eileen, you created a profile (which is empty) but you are not, mysteriously, on the 'members' list for this blog. :'( I don't know how to change that. Could you follow the link in that invitation email, and make sure you enter the fgumbert@etc. email address?

I've given all the members administrative rights. This means you can change our template (meaning add more links if you have good ones) or our profile -- links to family photos would be much appreciated -- or add members or whatever you want.

Thanks, y'all.
